In the role of investigators, students worked at discovering what the mystery white substance could be by looking at a variety of properties in chemicals. From their investigating they were able to deduce that the mystery substance was course salt for cooking. Students also made rock candy using boiling water and sugar. We were lucky enough to have Mrs. Halbert to come and help us. Thank you Mrs. Halbert for all of your help:) We have begun our journey of making dream houses integrating math and language arts."Thinking like a housebuilder, design and furnish the “House of Your Dreams.”As we begin our journals of brainstorming and blueprints, what advice could you offer students as they plan their houses?
We were fortunate enough to be able to work with Mr. Armitage for the past two weeks as our Artist in Residence. He taught us many things about song writing and having goals and dreams. We wrote a song to represent our last year at Lochearn to share with our school as we have many good memories of our school career here. Thank you, Mr. Armitage for inspiring us! We love Armi Music!
It was so cold outside last week, but we still managed to take a look at solids and liquids in science. Students explored using many different senses how a solid can change a liquid. They were able to taste during this experiment (only because it was safe!). Using lemon juice students explored the changes as we added sugar but did not stir and then what happened when we stirred the sugar. The final task had students look at whether or not they could separate the solid out of the liquid after stirring. Students used some remarkable methods and tools to try to come to a conclusion. In the end our results varied from group to group. Some were able to separate some of the sugar out while others found that the sugar in their experiment had dissolved.
We had a great week working with smarties and discovered so many new ideas and connections. We worked with fractions, decimals, estimating, and probability in math. Then we crossed over to science inquiring about the mysteries of smarties through evaluate different technique to separate different material with solids and liquids. Who knew you could learn so much from one box of smarties! "S"math on PhotoPeach We have been having a great time learning about fractions, percentages, decimals, and probability through smarties this week. Reflect on where else you might see examples of probability in your day.
Red and brown colors went together and started to cross. Red and yellow the red started first but the yellow ended first and the colors stoped in the middle they didn't mix at all. By Trace
